GLOCALIZATION: How
Followers of Jesus Engage a Flat World
(a book title by Bob Roberts, Jr.)
by Dr. Gary Becker
Recently I was introduced to this book, which is essentially a
book about evangelism and missions. It reflects the thinking of
many in our day about how we need to work toward the
transforming of our world. Like much of what is being written
today regarding church growth and missions, this book addresses
some real concerns about how we should go about reaching out
globally in a new world that brings with it new values.
The insights and challenges certainly are considerations we need
to make in ministry today. Wikapedia defines Glocalization as,
the term “glocal” refers to the individual, group, division,
unit, organization, and community which is willing and is able
to think globally and act locally.
I know this seems like a lot of technical stuff. The idea is
simply that we need to understand the global culture and live
out our faith in such a way that people see our faith and are
transformed through individual and personal ministry.
The book references Acts 11 as the example of missions and
states, The formula was simple: Go out and live it, and serve
others. As you speak, lives are transformed and the church is
established. . .

Are You Planning
a Missions Emphasis?
Let us Help through a Coaching Relationship

The use of the week long Missions Conference may be gone
for most churches, but there is a great need in relating
missions to our church body. Creativity in planning a missions
emphasis is essential for effectively creating an interest in
and support for missions in our culture today.
There are a number of reasons for this difficulty in creating
interest in missions:
1. Time is one of the first problems we need to face. People are
running schedules with work, youth activities, sports interest,
and other personal interests that limit time for extra church
meetings.
2. Perceptions of missions and missionaries are that they are dull
and uninteresting.
3. Pastors have not always been aware of some of the creative ways
to present missions in the church. In defense of the pastors,
they are often involved with so many areas of church
administration that missions may be forced to a back burner.
4. Financial struggles in churches have caused them to avoid
exposing the congregation to needs that may take away from
supporting the basic operation of the church.
One of our priorities is coming alongside churches to develop
their vision and stimulate interest through creative approaches
in developing missions emphasis. A first step in helping
churches in developing a creative missions emphasis is through a
coaching relationship. This relationship begins with a simple
meeting for exploration of ideas with the pastor and missions
leaders. Just give a call and we can set up an informal meeting.
Help keep the vision for missions alive!
